Harry Balfour School is extremely grateful to the County of Grande Prairie for its $50,000 contribution to its replacement school’s new playground. Phase 2 of the new playground, which will include an outdoor classroom and several smaller playground structures, will cost approximately $175,000.

Thanks to the school’s Participarent group, corporate sponsors, donations, funds raised at its Christmas concert, and a government grant, Harry Balfour School reached its fundraising goal of $345,000 for Phase 1 before the Christmas break. Now, with help from the County, the Division, and continued effort from Participarent, the school has almost reached its second goal of $175,000. Harry Balfour School Principal Jen Clevette says, “We are just so excited to be able to open our new building with a playground, that isn’t always the case for new schools.” Mrs. Clevette says the outdoor exercise equipment currently set up at Harry Balfour School will move to the new site and will also be available for use.

In 2023, County Council awarded a $50,000 grant to the Harry Balfour School Participarent Association in support of the playground at the replacement school.

“The County fosters community wellness and safety by being collaborative partners in the development and delivery of programs and activities to support residents,” says County Reeve Bob Marshall. “In providing this grant, we also acknowledge the efforts of the parent volunteers and the school and school division staff, and look forward to seeing students enjoying the playground and the new Harry Balfour School for many years to come.”

In addition to the County’s $50,000 grant, $50,000 will come from Peace Wapiti Public School Division funds in support of Phase 2 of the playground.

The Harry Balfour Replacement School is on schedule to open for the 2024-2025 school year, and staff anticipate the playground to be installed and ready for use on the first day of school.
