Whispering Ridge Community School student wins provincial art contest

Trustee Wendy Kelm presents Bailey her award.

Bailey Battig, Grade 5 student at Whispering Ridge Community School (WRCS), has won the Alberta Student Transportation Advisory Council’s School Bus Safety Week art contest. Students throughout the province were asked to create a poster with the theme Make the World Green, Ride Yellow. The art contest was open to students in Kindergarten through Grade 6; Bailey placed first in the Grade 5 category.

Bailey is the first student from Peace Wapiti Public School Division to win the contest, and her framed piece now sits proudly in the WRCS display case. She says she has been drawing since she can remember and that her artistic skill runs in the family. “We are a family of artists, we all love it.”

Bailey says when her teacher Ms. McDonald told the class about the optional art project, she was intrigued but it still took a whole day for her to decide to participate. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it, but after about a day I said okay, I’m going to do it!” Bailey says her classmates were supportive and were convinced she was going to win, but she was still shocked when Ms. McDonald announced her first place finish in front of the class earlier this year.

As the winner, Bailey has received her framed poster, an engraved plaque, a $100 cheque for a class field trip, and a $25 gift card to Chapters.
