Travel the World Together – PWPSD schools celebrate Family Literacy Day 2021

Literacy Day 2021 encourages families to “Travel the World Together” by using their imagination to go exploring and travel the world together as a family. Additional ideas are available in the resources section of the Family Literacy Day 2021 website. The website also includes an opportunity for families to join author and illustrator Barbara Reid online on Wednesday, January 27 during 2:30 - 3:00 p.m. MT for a demonstration on how to use clay to create a picture, followed by a Q & A session. The event is ideal for children in Grades 1-6. Space is limited and families should register here.

SCHOOL

EVENT PLAN

Beaverlodge Elementary School

A list of virtual tour videos chosen by a school committee will be provided to teachers for showing during the week of January 25. Students will mark their virtual in-class travels in a “passport” and will complete nightly virtual travel challenges at home. Filled passports will be entered in a draw.

Bezanson School

Families should watch the school’s Facebook page for videos of teachers reading stories during the week of January 25, and participate in daily “Family Word Game” challenges.

Bonanza School

During the week of January 25, students will participate in a “Let’s Travel the World Together with Reading” challenge, with prizes and draws. Students will track their reading in a passport, traveling from county to county based on their reading.

Harry Balfour School

In keeping with the "Travel the World Together” theme, students will read books with unique settings around the world on Monday and Tuesday, and pin flags on a world map in the school foyer. Wednesday will be Literary Character Dress-Up Day, and Thursday will be Pajama Day with extra reading time.

LaGlace School

ECS - Grade 9 students will participate in a Dr. Seuss-themed Literacy Day event on January 26. Students and staff will dress up as their favourite characters and enjoy virtual readings by special guests. Classes have been challenged to read 100 books during January 18-26.

Robert W. Zahara Public School

Students and staff will celebrate “Dress as your Favourite Book Character Day” on January 27. Local celebrities Carter Rowney of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and award-winning country singer Tenille Townes are listed among the community members and RWZ staff who will share virtual book and story readings with classes. Story and book settings will be plotted on a world map to align with the Literacy Day 2021 theme, “Travel the Word Together.”

Spirit River Regional Academy

On Literacy Day, students and staff can dress up as their favorite literary character.

Teepee Creek School

A “Get Caught Reading” bulletin board in the school will display photos submitted by parents who “catch” their child reading. Parents have been invited to record themselves reading a book or short story, to be presented “virtually” to classrooms, or to book a time to join a class over Google Meet.
